The stories have been rolling in this past week. 10 year old Junior Commando, Justin Gailis, son of 724Outdoors.com and Commando Hunting Products Prostaffer, Brian Gailis, dropped his impressive gobbler on film, http://www.724outdoors.com/Hunting/journal_detail.asp?wID=2063&iArticleID=4785&fID=19 .
My 8 year old nephew Jackson Klump was able to hear thunderous gobbles and watch a mature Tom court several hens as his dad, Dave called birds for him. As his hunt didn't allow for a harvest, he moved on to some incredible crappie fishing where he caught slabs like the one pictured below from a few weeks back.
One of the best stories of all is documented below by my brother Mark. His perspective on this incredible hunt with his 7 year old son Andrew sums it up best! Taking a youth on any hunting or fishing adventure creates lasting memories for everyone involved!
Andrew Klump with his 21 lb, 10 in beard, 1 in spurs Gobbler!
"Opening morning pre dawn we were sitting in our blind when we heard the 1st Owl call out. Shortly after the valley below lite up with a multitude of gobbles (WOW, they were everywhere). As the adrenalin flowed and the sun rose we spotted a hen enter the field below and as quick as she entered, she exited. Within 10 minutes a second hen entered the field and with in seconds a long beard was trailing behind. As we were working that nice Tom from 150 yards to within 75yards 2 more Tom's entered the field & chased off the 1st bird. With only one in full strut, I told Drew that was the dominant bird and that's the one to shoot. As I was video taping them coming directly to our hen decoy, I realized that they were approaching quickly so I took my eye off the camera, and wispered into Drew's ear to take his gun off safety and before I could get focused back on the birds BOOM!!!! he fired. He immediately stood up and with his 410 in one hand he pumped the other skyward yelling "Yes, I have Victory" when I told him he shot too soon, that I didn't have time to get the camera back on the birds his reply was "Dad, don't get mad, You told me (pre hunt) that when I take the safety off I can shoot when ever I have the sight on his head" and that's what he did. What a great weekend!"
"Get out and enjoy the outdoors!"
